There is something strange about our persistent need to make images. Painting has changed countless times, survived new technologies, and somehow remains a language we continue to return to. In Still MS Painting, painting meets the logic of the computer: brushstrokes appear and disappear like glitches, blue paint becomes a system error, images fail to load, and digital interfaces are painted by hand. Perhaps these glitches are not errors in the image at all, but traces of something in our own code — the impulse to paint, copy, preserve and transform what we see. The tools keep changing, but the impulse remains.
Don’t Buy is a visual artist who creates digital paintings, videos, and GIFs using artificial intelligence and mixed media. Embracing a moniker that itself subverts consumerist language, he approaches art-making with a hacker’s spirit – repurposing AI technology to explore the beauty of errors and the aesthetics of early digital culture.
