An animated, derivative work from "The Tower of Babel" (2024, Acrylic, 48"x36")

“The Tower of Babel story recounts how humanity, united in building a tower to reach the heavens, angered their creator. To thwart their ambitions, God confused their language, causing them to speak different tongues and scatter across the globe, unable to communicate effectively.

This cautionary tale about human pride and the consequences of attempting to challenge divine authority has a modern, digital parallel. Instead of bricks and mortar, we have constructed a skyscraper of algorithms and data in an attempt to control and understand our environments — bolstered by artificial and malign influences obscured by the silicon.

What began with optimism about a system to connect the world gave way to a disaffected and confused multipolar world of different realities — with each participant equally confident in their biases.

Has the modern Tower of Babel already fallen? Or do we have time to steer our digital connectivity toward understanding rather than succumbing to the discord of miscommunication?"

Watch the documentary behind the genesis work: https://vimeo.com/599755488 ) The second of a nine-part-series of collages, "R3C2" draws from dozens of images from a neural network, originally generated for a previous project. A combination of human and computer interpretations of abstraction, the original square images that emerged are ambiguous textures by themselves, but they can be stitched together to produce larger landscapes with uncanny, lifelike qualities. My process for building these collages can best be described as a reverse puzzle, where the look of the pieces guide what I decide the image will become. I was somewhat aesthetically inspired by space telescope photography, in which massive pictures of the most distant features we can measure are assembled together to make up a larger coherent picture. Space is the darkest object in the universe; exploring it nicely parallels the process of creative exploration, as both are acts of drawing out clarity from an ambiguous background.4e:T757,
