An ancient Japanese legend once told that every shadow is born from light. But what happens when someone falls into their own shadow, only to discover an entire world beneath it?
Beyond the boundaries of reality lies a place where time has no meaning, where memories take shape and forgotten existences wander endlessly. A world inhabited by the Umbras, shadowy reflections of humanity, echoes of those who are, those who once were, and those who have long been forgotten.
They resemble humans, imitate their movements, and carry fragments of memories that do not belong to them. Some remember faces they have never worn, others long for lives they have never lived. They exist as imperfect doppelgängers, desperately trying to become what they can only imitate. But a shadow can never truly become human.
When a young woman falls into this realm through her own shadow, she finds herself surrounded by these restless beings. Frightened by their unnatural existence, she fights against them, striking at the darkness that reaches for her. Yet every blow comes at a cost.
With each Umbra she strikes, the darkness begins to claim a part of her. Her garments slowly turn black, her fists become stained by the shadows she touches, and dark splashes across her face gradually reshape her features. The more she struggles against them, the less she resembles the person she once was.
The Umbras do not seek to destroy her. They seek to become her. For in a world made entirely of shadows, she is the only remaining source of light. The human presence that gives them shape, the existence they desperately wish to possess.
And as her light slowly fades, the boundary between the woman and her reflections begins to disappear.
Until one question remains: If a shadow becomes indistinguishable from the one who casts it, which of them is truly human?
