The air on platform Gwei 7, bound to the moon, was a calculated chill designed to sharpen the senses rather than numb them. Above the muted hum of distant orbital traffic, the soft, rhythmic clack of the automated sweepers was the only constant companion. They moved with a programmed indifference, polishing away the invisible dust of a million passing journeys.
The twin silhouettes, sheathed in the familiar, heavy-duty composites of a deep-space trek, stood poised at the edge of the quantum rails. Their helmets, now dimmed to conserve precious battery life, offered only the faintest glint of the platform’s sparse overheads.
Behind them, the massive viewport shimmered with the ghost of a departing vessel, a blur of compressed light and kinetic energy that had promised passage to the inner system.
But their destination lay further out, beyond the charted and the settled, a pilgrimage not to a physical moon, but to a concept, an untethered promise whispered across secure, encrypted channels. This wasn’t a mere departure; it was a commitment, a silent, irreversible transaction in the vast, cold ledger of the void. And with each slow, deliberate step towards the inbound glare, they knew the true cost of their faith was not measured in credits, but in the sheer, unyielding expanse of what lay ahead.
