After my mother’s final days at home, sleep changed.
It stopped being a place of rest and became a place of return. The vigilance, the fear, the waiting, the sounds of the house, the possibility that something might happen at any moment, all of it continued at night.
This work is about the strange persistence of those final days after they were over.
The body had left the vigil.
The mind had not.
