This image represents more than the transformation of the earth it represents overcoming fear to see life from a different perspective.
I have a fear of heights and helicopters, yet I chose to photograph this eruption from a doors off helicopter, with nothing separating me from the immense landscape below. Every instinct told me to fear the height, the open door and the vulnerability of being suspended above an active volcanic landscape. But I went anyway.
Below me, lava carved a glowing path across the earth, destroying what once existed while simultaneously creating new ground. In that moment, the landscape became a reflection of my own experience. I wasn't simply photographing transformation I was experiencing it.
Fear was still there, but it was no longer controlling what I was capable of seeing or creating.
Therapy Is Art means to me. Sometimes healing isn't about eliminating fear. Sometimes it's about carrying that fear with you, stepping beyond your comfort zone, and discovering what is waiting on the other side.
The volcano was creating new ground beneath me.
And by confronting my fear, I was creating new ground within myself.
