South Bay Holiday

Manhattan Beach has a special place in my heart. Growing up in the South Bay meant countless summer days at this beach. The iconic Roundhouse Aquarium that was part of the pier renovation in the 90s gets all dressed up with Holiday lights at the end of every year. My vision of a bucket list photo includes prominent Christmas lights on the pier mixed with an intense sunset burn. The timing of this is tricky as the pier lights don’t turn on until 20-30 minutes after sunset meaning that there needs to be a deep lingering burn to pull off this photo in a single exposure. On this magical evening, the stormy clouds parted just enough to ignite into a bright red explosion across the sky mixing with the textured moody clouds. I used a slower shutter speed to capture the motion of the wave breaking in the foreground while the pier lights reflected off the ocean surface. Bucket list photo achieved!
