This work began life as an alla prima pen and ink drawing created without any underlying sketch. i just started with the face and kept going with no clear idea of what I was going to draw. So most of the time I was struggling to keep my analytical brain out of the process and just let my subconscious brain and hand do whatever they were going to do. Recently--about eight years after doing the drawing--I scanned the it and painstakingly added color digitally and then ran it through a custom filter to create this highly graphic work. The image is 9000px by 9000px.
