When the strangest animal in the ocean gives us that look.
Means only on thing. They're about to spit out ink.
Octopus ink spray is a defense mechanism used by most octopus species to escape from predators. When threatened, an octopus releases a cloud of dark ink into the water, which serves multiple purposes:
Visual Obscuration: The ink cloud temporarily blinds predators, giving the octopus a chance to escape.
Chemical Irritant: The ink can contain substances (like tyrosinase) that irritate the predator’s eyes and dull their sense of smell and taste.
Mimicry Decoy: Sometimes, the ink is released in a shape that mimics the octopus, called a “pseudomorph,” distracting predators into attacking the ink cloud instead.
The ink is expelled from an ink sac near the digestive system and mixed with water from the siphon to create a spray.
