Uninvited, not unwanted,
With a voice soft, but insistent,
You entered unannounced,
Standing close at such great distance.
You pulled me near enough
Only then to push away
And, though without rebuff,
I suppose I did the same.
Evening’s fog fell on our love,
Hanging on that pause of night;
Dawn interrupted from above,
Which rendered gone by break of light.
I watched your outline rise and fall,
But with too respectful a gaze,
Which disappeared at morning’s call
And soon diffused there in the haze.
That infernal rising sun,
Which beset a troubled sky,
Did break a love before begun,
So that one night…it must suffice.
