Escaping the Calculating Machine
A collection in support of Rhizome’s 25th year of commissioning art online, released in collaboration with SuperRare
The generations of artists that arose out of computer culture speak the language of the images that made them. Ranging from Newgrounds gamers to teletext writers, they approach the act of creation, as artists always have, in relation to their means of circulation and the tools available to them. Hours inside software appear as forum workarounds and crash reports, and when Photoshop fails us, we build our own. Occasionally, and luckily for us, an artwork appears.
This collection asks ten artists to reflect on their relationship to their tools, on how software limitations have shaped their work, and on the subcultures that form around the tools they use.
A contextual apparatus engulfs both artist and artwork.
How often do we peel back an image to unveil its making?
