LIA: Adam and Eve

Adam & Eve is a two part artwork reflecting on the representation of binarism. They would be LIA‘s first two artworks on SuperRare. Both artworks share the same unique code which created them. In this common base, a single line defines the only difference in their code: the type of shape drawn into the work. While soft, round circles are assigned to the Adam version, pointy sharp triangles are written into Eve – hence challenging the traditional mapping of these two forms. In this study, LIA recalls the idea that abstract shapes can also contain meaning beyond comprehension, as demonstrated in the takete-maluma effect introduced by Köhler in 1929.

Austrian artist LIA is considered one of the pioneers of software and net art and has been producing works since 1995. Her practice spans across video, performance, software, installations, sculpture, projections and digital applications. The artist’s primary working material is code, which consists of LIA translating a concept into a formal written structure that is used to create a “machine” generating real-time multimedia outputs. LIA’s works combine traditions of drawing and painting with the aesthetics of digital images and algorithms, characterised by a minimalist quality and by an affinity with conceptual art. She focuses on the translation of certain experienced principles into abstract forms, movements and colours in order to allow the viewer to explore the same on a subconscious level.

LIA has exhibited internationally including Dong Gallery Taipei; Contemporary Istanbul; Art Science Museum Singapore; Variation – Media Art Fair, Paris; San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art; MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art Vienna; Design Museum Holon, Israel; Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture, Moscow; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Ars Electronica Exhibition and Florence Biennale. The artist has also received various awards, including Outstanding Artist Award, Austria; Digital Graffiti Curator’s Choice Award; Prix Ars Electronica, Award of Distinction, and Diagonale Film Festival, Innovative Cinema, First Prize.
