Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Vinicius Costa is a digital artist whose highly detailed work is characterized by a distinct style and who is known for creating fantastic and unique worlds. The press has celebrated his work for being “jaw-droppingly detailed, original, and weird…” along with showering it with accolades such as “stunning craftsmanship and imagination!” A Clio and ADC Young Guns winner, Vinicius has also spoken about his whimsical style at multiple conferences worldwide.

“I started my career about 12 years ago when I made what was probably my first all-3D original artwork. I quickly realized I could construct small narratives and haven’t stopped since then. All these years, I have been developing these passionate personal projects and expanding my skills towards more complex topics and worlds.”

Vinicius uses surrealism to create visual narratives that tend to eschew the literal. He believes in fostering a dialogue between the artist and viewer that takes form in a silent conversation. In order to achieve this kind of engagement, he combines very tactile textures, complex models, and a plethora of patterns and colors that come together in spectacular harmony. In the result, one can see that the detail exhibited in each piece could only come from an artist who truly loves his craft.

“My work aims to tell a short story. It has layers and layers of love in every detail. It truly comes from inside. Every piece reflects something from my past in Brazil or the things I experience around me now in New York. My work has brought me here, given me recognition, and opened great doors to meet wonderful people. My style reflects me as an artist but also has a big impact on me as an individual. I could only spend this much time on a personal project if it becomes a means of pleasure.”

Vinicius Costa’s elaborate work gathers inspiration from the surrealist masters, Egyptian art, and nostalgic kitsch objects from the past and adds a twist of saturated colors. In this mix, close attention is always given to harmony between all the elements. Vinicius is drawn to imagining places you’d want to visit again and again (or maybe even in real life)—and making pleasant connections with people along the way.

“I remember being this quiet, dyslexic kid paying close attention to everything around me: people, places. Reading being somewhat difficult for me, I developed a sharp eye for observation. I believe we need to focus on hearing our own voice more, becoming aware of what makes us special, and finding those singular feelings that make us unique. Then, when we are able to exteriorize all of these things in art of any shape or form, you get something truly real and therefore unique.”

Vinicius is also the co-founder of an award-winning animation studio in New York named ROOF Studio. His style can be seen in the different campaigns of his clients looking to create a fantastical world for their products. “I have always invested 100% of myself into everything I do. It is a bit of an obsession for me. My commercial work is just as detailed as my original artwork, but there is usually a difference in how the message comes across. Clients look for something very clear and literal, and in my personal work, I focus on a more subliminal communication to engage with people on a more intimate level.”

Vinicius will be launching his first NFT release, titled ” The End is Just a New Beginning,” soon. Stay tuned! 😉
