Lucifer’s Manifesto

“Lucifer’s Manifesto”, the first artwork of the “Antithesis” collection depicts the post-banishment of the highest-ranking Angel according to the Bible and old beliefs, Lucifer. Inspired by the 1893 painting “Falling Angel” (by Alexandre Cabanel 1845-1887), Lucifer is the depiction of regret, war, crime, and sin. The banishment of the Light-Bringer could be considered to be his own version of hell, there are many interpretations of this myth, and story. The one I tried to depict resembles the love of Lucifer for God and envy against Humanity. In his attempt, he’s trying to collect throughout history, the hands of the mightiest and rarest people possible, with the intent to gain back his ability to fly and reach the heavens. As noticed, the wing seems to reach the sky but fails to touch it, reference to “The creation of Adam” (by Michelangelo Buonarroti 1508-1512), as the clouds push back and gain distance from it. The whole artwork is a dance, from the wings and sky to the waves pushing against the land full of blood, to the moon coronating Lucifer with his devilish horns as humans described him during the centuries. “Hell is being far away from what you love the most”. 7940 x 6460px digital painting.

Triptych

My genesis piece on SuperRare is a digital version of my painting “Triptych”. The oil painting was created in 1984 and is now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas. The size of the original painting is 78″ x 224″. I created three separate NFTs in Photoshop, one for each of the panels, as animated gifs. These were then combined in a video showing the panels side by side as I would like them to be displayed. The format is true to the work in its physical form at the museum. The painting is about dread in spirituality and change. It is all happening in the night. On the left is a lone rider with destination unknown, on the right is a figure wresting with the elements and with a mythical giant bird, and in the center is a transcendental experience they both have to go through, where they meet death face to face and survive. The painting is also a dialectic between abstraction and figuration, so this drama is very much played out in the context of contemporary art. This painting has an interesting history. It was purchased by Ed Broida in the 1980’s as the centerpiece for the museum he was planning to build in NYC. Due to complicated zoning issues the museum was never built. Mr. Broida was a major collector of Philip Guston and many other important artists. When he died he donated his collection to major museums.

Afternoon Delight

Summer of 2020 lacked many things, surprises were plentiful however. They ranged from disorienting to terrifying, but on our toes we stayed. On a humid afternoon, the air opaque with confusion and cautious hope, another surprise came as quick as a flick of a paintbrush. Sheets of water spilled from the heavens on to a tin table, filling up water glasses and a half eaten bowl of crab linguine. We watched from a damp and dismantled dining room, still catching our breath during the delightful deluge on Broome street. A happy surprise.
