Harvmcm is a scottish artist

Growing up with technology and the internet has totally changed the way people interact with art and their perception of what art can be. I think people who have grown up in the GenZ era are more accepting of all kinds of art compared to previous generations. The access to art now is at an all time high, as we interact with art online every single day. We now have access to a wide array of mediums to create our art whether it’s digital or otherwise. If I go onto my feed, I see fine art accounts retweeting photographers, and photographers retweeting illustrators and so on. There is a strong community of creators, naturally interacting and growing together. This is what I think makes it special.

Apart from the community, another thing that is unique and special about being an artist in this generation is the potential access to a platform and an audience. I’m a 19 year old artist, still at uni, without an art degree, the doors to the traditional art world would be firmly closed to me. But with the online art world, everybody has access and anyone can participate. I think the role of an artist hasn’t really changed, artists create for many reasons whether that’s to educate, to entertain, to comment on the world or to share their experience. The key difference now is that these ideas can be expressed immediately and inclusively, anyone with a passion for it can get involved and be heard and we as artists are able to listen directly to our mutuals. 

Art is central to me at the moment especially. It’s like this subconscious need to create every day, I can’t imagine not creating, it’s this instinctual drive to produce and improve. It’s kind of hard to answer it in words, I just have this need to create and I have always had it. Art for me is a means of focus, purpose and expression. This became particularly important during lockdown as art was the only way I found to express how I was feeling. 

All I want for my future is to have a creative career. I am currently studying Architecture at uni and as of recently art has become my part time job. I use art as an avenue to express myself, most of my art is influenced by the mindset I’m in at that specific time and the emotions and thoughts I’m working through. I started seriously focusing on my art early this year, and I am excited to see where I can take it. I want to build an expansive portfolio, both in art and architecture. I want to make art that I enjoy and hopefully people will enjoy it just as much. 

I think I am at a very crucial point in my life, having just made art my part time job I am starting to realise that I can make a living from my art, freeing me up to explore my creativity through the support of those who enjoy and buy my pieces. I am still relatively new to sharing my art and taking part in all that the online art community has to offer and I think from here on I can only continue to grow and develop my style further.

There is a long list of artists that I admire and that have influenced and inspired my work recently. One of my biggest inspirations recently has been George Condo and his portraits. I love the way he abstracts the human form. This surrealism can be seen in some of my work too. Other artists that have inspired me recently include Basquiat, Francis Bacon and Rembrant. But the majority of my inspiration on a daily basis comes from all the artists I follow and interact with online. 

I think it is so important to be consistent with creating and sharing your art. The internet allows us the best opportunity to share art and interact ever and if you are consistent on social media you will only grow and improve. Interact with artists that you enjoy and share your feedback as much as possible. As long as you are creating art that you enjoy, that is the main thing, create for you and people will notice the difference instantly.

GenZ artists are a variety of different things, we are open, experimental, inclusive and supportive of all kinds of art. These traits are some of the reasons why the community online is so special. GenZ artists are all very used to technology and social media, for many of us it’s almost second nature. 

The crypto art world is very exciting, it’s still a really fresh addition to the way artists can interact with art and make a living while doing so. The crypto art world allows digital artists the opportunity to potentially receive the same exposure that the fine art world gives traditional artists. I think the community can only grow and grow. Even though these worlds are different, they still naturally overlap and influence one another. Especially today as more and more artists are exhibiting their art online. The hype around the community and the eyes on it are only increasing as more and more artists venture in the NFT market. The art on sites like SuperRare are only going to get better and it is an exciting time to be involved in digital art!
