Fibonacci numbers are expressed by the recursive formula on natural numbers F(n) = F(n-1) + F(n-2), with F(0) = F(1) = 1.
They are named after Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa, later known as Fibonacci. In his 1202 book Liber Abaci, Fibonacci introduced the sequence to Western European mathematics, although the sequence had been described earlier in Indian mathematics. It appears to have first arisen as early as 200 BC in work by Pingala on enumerating possible patterns of poetry formed from syllables of two lengths. The title of this work of art dedicated to Fibonacci numbers is the name of Pingala's cryptic formula describing Fibonacci numbers, misrau cha, meaning "the two are mixed". The animated image is a loop of the first 47 Fibonacci numbers with increasing font size, deliberately breaking the canvas limits. The 47th Fibonacci number, or 1,836,311,903, is the largest number of the sequence representable in datatype for integers used to store Fibonacci numbers in the Processing sketch that generates the image.
