We are created with a purpose, an assignment that we are meant to fulfill during our time on Earth. Understanding what this assignment is can be crucial in living a fulfilling and meaningful life. One way to gain insight into our purpose is through pain. Pain comes in various forms and can manifest itself in our lives at different times.
Sorrow is better than laughter; it may sadden your face, but it sharpens your understanding. -Ecclesiastes 7:3 GNT. There is wisdom to be gained from our experiences of pain and hardship. Pain is an inevitable part of life, and it serves as one of the most effective methods for learning from our mistakes. It is often said that we should learn from our mistakes, but it is essential to question whether we genuinely take the time to reflect upon and learn from them. Do
we acknowledge our mistakes, strive to avoid repeating them in the future, or do we simply forget about them as soon as we find comfort?
Most of the pain we experience, especially the recurring and persistent ones, are indicators that we lack adequate knowledge or understanding in a particular area of our lives. It becomes our responsibility to seek out the necessary information and wisdom that can help us master that phase and progress to the next level. Ignoring the lessons that pain offers us will only perpetuate similar, if not more intense, painful experiences until we take the necessary actions to grow and evolve.
In some instances, God may use pain to capture our attention when we become engrossed in pursuits that divert us from our true purpose. This was revealed in Job 33:19 - 22 MSG: “Or, God might get their attention through pain, by throwing them on a bed of suffering, So they can't stand the sight of food, have no appetite for their favorite treats" These moments of deep anguish serve as wake-up calls, urging us to reassess our priorities and realign ourselves
with our intended path.
In other cases, constant pain in a specic area of our lives can be a mechanism through which we develop empathy and understanding for others who may face similar circumstances. When we experience and overcome challenges, we gain valuable insights and strength that enable us to provide hope and support to others who are struggling. As the saying goes, "the broken become masters at mending." Our own journey through suffering equips us with the tools to help mend the broken hearts and lives of those around us, bringing light and
encouragement to their darkness.
The purpose of suffering goes beyond mere endurance. It offers us an opportunity for growth, learning, and transformation. By embracing the lessons that pain teaches us, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, our purpose, and our capacity to empathize and assist others. Instead of shying away from suffering, we should approach it with a willingness to learn, to find
meaning, and to ultimately become stronger and more compassionate individuals.
