Captured along the crater rim of Kīlauea on Hawaiʻi Island, this photograph reveals an extraordinary meeting of volcanic landscape and atmospheric light.
A mysterious band of color stretches diagonally across the darkened sky, resembling a rainbow emerging from the shadows. Beneath it, the rugged volcanic terrain, fractured pavement, and resilient vegetation tell a story of a landscape continually shaped by one of the world's most active volcanoes.
The rarity lies in the combination of location, atmospheric conditions, timing, and perspective.
The colorful arc appears against an unusually dark sky, creating a striking contrast between light and shadow. Its muted reds, blues, and violet tones suggest an atmospheric optical phenomenon, potentially a rainbow illuminated under low-light conditions.
If this was photographed at night under moonlight, it could be a moonbow, also known as a lunar rainbow. Moonbows are uncommon because they require a bright Moon, moisture in the atmosphere, and precise positioning between the observer, Moon, and water droplets.
The Kīlauea crater rim adds another dimension of rarity. This is a dynamic volcanic environment where the landscape itself records the immense geological forces beneath Hawaiʻi.
The result is a photograph that brings together the fleeting beauty of atmospheric light and the enduring power of volcanic creation.
What makes this image particularly compelling is that the phenomenon cannot simply be recreated on demand. The photographer must be in the right location at the right moment, with the right atmospheric conditions.
The fractured roadway in the foreground creates a powerful visual contrast: the destructive forces of the Earth below and the delicate beauty of light above.
Photograph captures the dramatic remains of Chain of Craters Road.
Originally dedicated in 1928, Chain of Craters Road was extended to the coast in 1965, connecting the Kīlauea area with Kalapana. Over the decades, eruptions repeatedly destroyed sections of the road. Since 1986, lava flows have covered nearly nine miles of roadway.
The destruction of roads around Kīlauea's summit occurred during the massive caldera collapse between May and August 2018, one of Hawaiʻi's most significant volcanic events in over 200 years.
This photograph captures two contrasting forces of nature: the immense power of a collapsing volcano and the delicate beauty of moonlight illuminating the atmosphere.

In Hawaiian Culture seeing a Night Time Rainbow is good luck
With the Naked Eye I can spot Lunar Rainbows from it being White.
Slow Shutter from a Camera is the only way to bring out the actual colors.
