Through the power of gaze, Bernstein’s Studio 54, Couch Scene Contact Sheet, from 1979 takes the most dynamic elements of classic bacchanal paintings and brings them into the glamorous yet grungy environments of New York City nightlife, creating a unique opportunity for a genesis NFT.
In this single frame, captured in an era where photographers were limited to 36 shots per roll, Bernstein brings to life a dynamic conversation and social structure– he has managed to capture a complex nature of nightlife in which elements of both the Apollonian and also the Dionysian are rendered lucid.
This drop coincides with Bisexual Awareness Week, where 10% of sales from this NFT will benefit the incredible Marsha P Johnson Institute, chosen by our good friend, Honey Dijon.
The Marsha P. Johnson Institute (MPJI) protects and defends the human rights of Black transgender people. They do this by organizing, advocating, creating an intentional community to heal, developing transformative leadership, and promoting collective power within the LGBTQ+ community.
