Shangdi, also known as the Supreme Emperor, is an ancient deity in Chinese religion, embodying the highest divine authority and moral order. Initially central to the religious practices of the Shang dynasty, Shangdi was perceived as the celestial ruler who presided over the fate of the nation, natural phenomena, and the welfare of the ancestors. Worship of Shangdi involved elaborate rituals and sacrifices conducted by the king, who acted as the intermediary between Shangdi and the people. As the Zhou dynasty succeeded the Shang, the concept of Tian (Heaven) evolved, gradually absorbing the functions and attributes of Shangdi, reflecting a shift in religious focus towards a more abstract and moralistic Heaven.
