Abigail, 1894

Perhaps the most intriguing work of the collection, Abigail, appears to be a painting of a woman dressed in masculine clothing. While women in men’s clothing (and the reverse) were likely a sight that Charles had seen at the downtown bars he frequented, the bucolic scenery presented here is a surprising setting and indicates a closer relationship. Inscription (from reverse): A glorious week in the country. The sky! Oh, the sky! What a wonderful time we had.
