This triptych releases the viewer from any thought that Charles could have been painting scenes of merely “romantic friendships.” In particular, Doves by the Sea II shows a clear kiss that couldn’t be construed as anything but. The three paintings begin with Carl and Jonathan resting on a log.
Inscription (from reverse):
Carl and Jonathan.
