Three years ago, I was going to my first Carnival in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
At some point during the chaos of the day, I stumbled into a small bloco in a neighborhood called Concórdia. That area is known for its traditional Candomblé terreiros, and on one of the streets there was a celebration happening. A capoeira circle was forming, drums echoing between the houses, people clapping, singing.
And right next to it, there was a bull.
Or better, a man dressed as a bull.
He was walking down the street in this almost frightening performance. That was the intention. He would charge at people like a wild bull chasing you down. It was playful but intense. And the ones who engaged the most were the children. Even the grown ones.
That moment stayed with me for a long time.
That unchoreographed dance.
That kind of party that is born on every corner without permission.
It changed my life.
Carnival, as a free and popular celebration, became something sacred to me. Something that reshapes my life every single year.
The playfulness. The surrender. The famous folia. It’s hard to explain in words. But maybe the love that runs through the streets during those days is captured in this painting.
The joy.
The color.
The innocence.
And, inevitably, the sin.
