From the silk screen to the blockchain: Russell Young brings Marilyn to the metaverse

British-American artist Russell Young, known for his diamond-dusted silkscreen paintings of cultural icons, is now transferring his art onto the blockchain in his newest work, “Marilyn Crying.” The NFT consists of 100 original colors created from the process of making silk screen paintings. Each of the panels of “Marilyn Crying” is a photograph of an individual silk screen painting, in which Young rigorously reflects the raw, hands-on nature of his craft. The piece showcases over 1,000 variations which he mapped himself.

To discover this new way of bringing images to life in a new medium was an incredibly rewarding process. I already think of my work in a linear, cinematic sense because my practice consists of creating series of screen prints that are of icons, protagonists of America’s culture and counterculture throughout history. NFTs allow me to translate the filmic language of my physical work and give it an energy all of its own.

— Russell Young

NFTs are like another color in my artist palette. They’re a new way for me to communicate my obsessions with fame, shame, and color with the world.

— Russell Young

“Marilyn Crying” on SuperRare

With its elements of repetition, transition, and movement, “Marilyn Crying” traces Young’s roots as a photographer capturing the music scene of 1980s London, to filming over 100 music videos in MTV’s golden age in the 1990s, to hand-painting and hand-pulling hundreds of silk screen paintings today. Can the physical translate into the digital? Young thinks it is worth a try.

“Huge Red B On The Street”

Edition 1 of 1

<How to buy cheap Bitcoin with Ethereum> The origins of illustrator and artist Andy Kuhn’s “How to buy cheap Bitcoin with Ethereum” series can be
traced to a 2018 solo exhibition in Taipei, Taiwan. After witnessing the meteoric rise of Bitcoin, Kuhn asked
himself if the masses would be interested in an artistic take on cryptocurrency. Feeding off his own curiosity,
Kuhn decided to do some Bitcoin drawings and exhibit them. Kuhn displayed his drawings in cheap Ikea
frames and sold them on a daily basis, the price depending on the fluctuating supply.
Upon discovering NFTs, Kuhn joked to himself that NFTs provided the perfect format for his Bitcoin drawings.
But the joke became more serious. He started asking himself more questions… Could his little Bitcoin scribbles
become as valuable as Bitcoin itself? What if one of my drawings becomes more valuable than 1 BTC?
Would that be a confirmation of the worth of collectibles, or would the whole thing be written off as yet
another bubble or scam? Kuhn invites both collectors and art enthusiasts to have a look at his project. His
work always starts with questions. It’s the collectors and viewers who provide the answers. 2022 will
be a year of continuous questions and answers….

“Tulle 034_v1 🔥”

Edition 1 of 1

This piece, made from mesh fabric suspended between off-camera support structures, was shot on 4×5 film in October of 2021 on the outer banks of North Carolina. Like all my work, “Tulle 034_v1” is a collaboration with nature. I constructed
the installation, but the wind, light and other natural forces determined its shape, movement, and
ultimately its personality. The resulting photograph is a visualization of forces we can’t normally
see, and an attempt to tap nature’s raw creativity. 3000X2361, by Thomas Jackson

“Awakening”

Edition 1 of 1

Part 1 of 3 in my “Self Discovery” series that revolves around how I’ve grown to be the photographer that
I am today. “It is possible to experience an awakening in this life through realising
just how precious each moment in time truly is.” In the last year after returning home to New Zealand from the United States, I realised that nothing
brings me more joy than being out in nature and capturing the kind of beauty that words can’t adequately
describe. My most recent road trip around the South Island was a defining moment in my photography
career as I pushed my creative boundaries further. This image was taken from a magical sunrise moment
in New Zealand, in an area of the country that often sees a lot of rain and clouds.

“City of Angels”

Edition 1 of 1

Have you ever wondered what Downtown Los Angeles looks like from above? DTLA has some of recognizable
skyscrapers and architecture. I wanted to show it in a very unique perspective. I took this photo one morning
when I was on the way to LA when I noticed that the clouds were low enough you can see the tall buildings
over them. I had to pull over and flew the drone up. Creating this image wasn’t easy, I had 25 minutes to take
20+ photos covering most of DTLA and manually stitched them all together in post. I’m very happy with
the result and I must say that morning was pretty epic.
The collector will also get a signed print.

Infinite

Edition 1 of 1

For my SuperRare genesis, I decided to choose five cities around the world that helped fuel my passion for
photography. The first is Dubai, a place I would’ve never dreamed to explore. Upon arrival, I met up with
local photographers that I followed on the internet. We instantly bonded over good food, rooftops, and
photography. After an endless search for the perfect rooftop, we found this one, a spectacular view I had
never seen before. We immediately got kicked out by the building management, but I knew it would
be special to witness this location at night.

PARADIGM N3

Edition 1 of 1

PARADIGM is a series based on 12 unique imaginary worlds. Sometimes hostile, sometimes soothing, these worlds surprise us with their wild nature, their abstract and organic essence and take us on a journey to the other side of the mirror.

Kristen Roos is Canadian artist whose practice includes a wide range of mediums including – animation, sound, printmaking, and textiles. All of Kristen’s work on blockchain has been created with vintage software from the 1980’s & 90’s, using techniques found in this early software such as color cycling. His work is a living document of historic software, speaking to the legacy of paint and animation software for early personal computers.

Ultra Deluxe Ville

Edition 1 of 1

This work takes its name from the vintage paint software that it was created with – Ultrapaint & Deluxe Paint
(Macintosh & Amiga 1990-91). The architectural structures were inspired by Vancouver’s cityscape, where Kristen currently resides.
The patterns found in the buildings and screens in Ultra Deluxe Ville reference historic paint patterns found
in paint and draw software with similar user interfaces from the 1980’s and 1990’s. These patterns also inform
Kristen’s textile work, and speak of the connection between weaving patterns, looms and the history of paint
software for early personal computers. GIF, RGBIV+greyscale, 132 frames, 25 fps

“2121,” Italy’s first museum exhibition on Crypto Art inaugurates alongside past masterpieces

It is called “2121,” the first major NFT museum exhibition in Italy, as the future centenary of the year of grace that saw Crypto Art explode on a planetary scale and bring it to the attention of the general public.

From 23 November to 6 February 2022, DART Dynamic Art Museum, an innovative museum project conceived by Piergiulio Lanza and architect Riccardo Manfrin, and WRONG THEORY, the first real life production in the NFT world, formed by the union of Alessandro Brunello, Founder of the exchange Bibipom.com and InartNFT.com exchange, Alan Tonetti, Founder of Stardust S.p.a. and CEO of TaoDust and Serena Tabacchi, Director of MoCDA, Museum of Contemporary Digital Art, have brought the largest collection of NFT works to the historic spaces of the Museo della Permanente in Milan.

The artists include blue chips such as Beeple, XCopy, Pak, Coldie, Trevor Jones, Hackatao and Matt Kane, the so-called OG (acronym for Old Gangster, i.e. the pioneers of the Crypto revolution), alongside a select group of artists from all over the world, from Germany’s Bakaarts to Norway’s Henrik Huldalen, from the Englishman Billelis to the Frenchmen Alotta Money and Raphael Lacoste, from the Dutchman Daniel Martin to the Australian Nate Hill, as well as a large Italian group including Dangiuz, Skygolpe, Fabio Giampietro, Federico Clapis, Annibale Siconolfi, Dot Pigeon, Giovanni Motta, Alessandro Bavari, Mattia Cuttini, Alessio De Vecchi and many others. The exhibition also features stellar collectibles such as the Cryptopunks and the Bored Ape Yacht Club, which have become status symbols for collectors and icons for the crypto community.

To underline the scale of the event, along with the ‘2121’ exhibition, DART also organised a large exhibition of Old Masters, entitled ‘Masterpieces from Private Collections’, with works by

Sebastiano Ricci, Caravaggio, Guercino and Velsquez, among others. The idea is to affirm a kind of continuity between past and present, rather than to emphasise the technological discontinuity between physical art and crypto art. Yet if it is true that creativity does not depend on the medium used, there is no doubt that the blockchain and NFT revolution has brought out a gigantic artistic potential, a new scene that has brought to the fore a large number of new artists who have worked in film, video games or advertising and who can now finally express themselves outside of any commercial commission. Alongside artists from the traditional art system, there are many self-taught and above all many conceptual artists, art directors, web designers, game designers and matt painters who have joined forces during the pandemic to develop new systems to give their digital art practice a commercial dimension that was previously almost non-existent. The exhibition catalogue, the first publishing product of its kind dedicated to NFT, represents the entry of crypto art into the history of art.

The crypto artists represented here, the architects of a revolution that was facilitated by the opening of the first platforms dedicated to the sale of NFT digital art, which, through the function of “minting”, made it possible to insert dematerialised works into the blockchain, find themselves for the first time within the walls of the Permanente in Milan, a museum that in the past has launched and made recognisable other important artistic currents.

The “2121” exhibition is the most far-reaching of the recent European exhibitions and, with over 60 artists, the most representative of the international crypto scene. It is the first stage in a journey that promises to bring together the younger generation and those traditionally interested in art, but it is also a sort of baptism of fire to present what is likely to be the dominant art form for decades to come.

“HOPE أمل”

Edition 1 of 1

This photograph had a huge impact on me during the difficult time in lockdown of the pandemic. Photography
and family helped me save my mental health. It was at the height of the crisis that photography became
the new manifestation of family love for me, and it is for this reason that I chose to call this piece “HOPE”.
This photograph presents my sister as the model, and my mother’s contribution as the stylist; it is a
true artwork created out of family love. “HOPE”, the internationally recognized photograph in my body of work. This piece made various
appearances in magazines including Vogue and The Guardian, as well as being showcased in the
Photo Vogue Festival of 2021 in Milano.

“all my friends grew up and moved on”

Edition 1 of 1

The thought that everyone you once spent hours talking to and growing up with just slowly drifting into
their new life. Molding into the people they always wanted to be. I wanted this for them because I
always wanted that for myself, but with this understanding comes with a lump in the back of my throat.
We would become strangers and the thought of them forgetting about me hurt me. It made me question
my life choices and the path that I am on. I was getting in touch with reality and realizing we are just
experiencing one another for a limited amount of time. Good things don’t last forever but the memory
does. Driving past this location on the way to a family diner grabbed my eye because it embodies all
of those things. A place thats still intact, forgotten, and hanging on while being reclaimed by nature.
I set up my shot and noticed that the light was too bright taking away the attention from everything important.
I blocked the light out with a birdhouse and was taken back by the tree overlooking the whole scene.
Everyone grew up and moved on from this place .

“Working with a variety of mediated photographic sources, ranging from television, the internet, and film stills, Rook artificially constructs his disquieting imagery. His filmic assemblages could remain in the photographic domain as an artistic statement and carry relevance, however, his further activity of painting form the manipulated imagery, forces us to position the work within the lineage of historic figurative painting, and thus we have a very different viewing engagement, and duration.”

After the Revenant

Edition 1 of 1

A naive and grandiose paean to cinema and boyhood dreams of exploring the wilderness. And an exploration of the seductive surfaces of cartooning and renders. From Asterix to The Road.

BREAKFAST is a digital kinetic art studio known for creating some of the most technologically-complex artworks in the world, grounded in themes around climate change, nature, and human existence, BREAKFAST was established in 2009 by Andrew Zolty and Mattias Gunneras.

Don’t Go Quiet – Unrest in 2020

Edition 1 of 1

This is not a digital rendering, but rather a video of a kinetic artwork made of Flip-Discs—physical
discs that mechanically flip between two sides via electromagnets. The physical artwork was created
during the surge in nationwide protests against racial injustice in 2020. An upside-down flag
represents a country in distress. The sweep of a stripe occurs each time an individual uses the hashtag
#blacklivesmatter. The title, “Don’t Go Quiet,” is a reminder that we cannot let this become a passing moment—
we must keep the conversation going and keep this flag moving. The particular video used to create this
NFT was captured on June 10, 2020—a day when thousands of schools and universities, businesses, and institutions
around the world shut down to give people time to reflect and act upon racism and injustice.

Johan Lolos (b. 1987) is a Belgian-Greek travel photographer also known as lebackpacker on social media. He originally got famous for his landscape photography, featuring some of the wildest and most remote places on Earth. While he still loves photographing the outdoors, he now also focuses on wildlife and travel documentary photography. His debut book ‘Peaks of Europe’ was published in 2018. 10,000+ copies have been sold worldwide.

“Explosion of Colors”

Edition 1 of 1

“Explosion of Colors” is Johan Lolos’ genesis piece and is part of his genesis NFT series “Hálendið” which
means “Highlands” in Icelandic. “Hálendið” is a photography series of 5 pieces that are a tribute to the painting-like landscapes of the Icelandic Highlands.
Ever since Johan first visited this part of the world he has been amazed by the huge diversity of colors that
can be found in the Highlands. The unparalleled contrasts and shapes of the Hálendið make this region of Iceland
so unique in the whole world, to the point it becomes almost surreal to any visitor.
This particular piece is an aerial image of Landmannalaugar, shot from a Cessna aircraft. The unique colors
found in that place are completely natural, a result of local geothermal activity. The very first time Johan went
to Landmannalaugar, he just couldn’t believe his eyes. Was it real? Was it a dream? Why did those mountains
look like paintings? His obsession with the Icelandic Highlands never stopped, to the point that they became his
favorite landscapes to photograph. “Explosion of Colors” is Johan Lolos’ second most popular image of all time.
It was first featured in his debut book Peaks of Europe (2018), and has been sold to multiple clients and magazines
ever since. ** The collector will receive a gallery quality, signed and framed physical print of the image alongside
the NFT. The print will be delivered with a certificate of authenticity. 5000x3712px

Atomaus

Edition 1 of 1

It all started with a doodle that he was sketching in 1993. It looked like a combination of the Japanese
cartoon character “Iron Arm Atom” and “Mickey Mouse” from Walt Disney.  That turned into Atomaus. When he first created Atomaus, he thought it  was a kind of symbol that combined the concepts that appeared in American culture and  concepts created based on Japanese culture. In the early days, Atomaus was an image like
a simple black-and-white symbol without a shadow or three-dimensional effect,
but since then, the body, background, and color have been applied, changing into various
forms without staying at the symbol level.
Lee Dongi’s Genesis NFT, which will be introduced on Super Rare, amplified tension and vitality
by expressing Atomaus’s earliest form of head in 3D and adding flash effects on top of it in
collaboration with digital artist Yi Tim.

“Self Portrait of Aleqth.png”

Edition 1 of 1

I’m inspired by the surrealist movement. The way the objects are rendered as they were barely
even there, the depth of feel (and field), not to mention the colors? Come on man, Surrealism
is fireeee. This is a self portrait, an expressionist work representing me and a figurative embodiment
of my imagination. This also happens to be my first mint on SuperRare, which I’m clearly very
excited about. I wanted to start of strong, with a BANG, and I think I really brought it on this one.
Owner of this NFT has the option to receive the original, which is on 8.5×11 inch paper.
