An Instruction Guide to Power: A Child’s Machiavelli, Social Media and the Metaverse

Though Niccolò Machiavelli’s famous political treatise was posthumously published as The Prince, the text reveals the utter lack of divine right that those in power could assume. They had to fight and finagle for their position, manipulate and murder to retain it. They were all too human.

The fights over social media giants, news information outlets, and the metaverse make The Prince all too relevant these days. SuperRare artist Claudia Hart’s “A Child’s Machiavelli” is a series of NFTs based on 1995 paintings that became a book and a cult collectible in 1998, and republished in 2019 to acclaim. Then in 2021 came Machiavelli World, a social VR performance hub. This iterated twist unifies children’s book images from the early 20th century with the word and spirit of the 16th century political treatise, minted together for the cryptoverse. It is an instruction guide to power for the young.

Children’s book literature was one of the first market specializations of the 1800s. Products, colors, and lifestyles were invented to commercialize the utopian ideal of childhood. Children’s clothing was color-coded by gender at the start of the 20th century to increase sales by segmenting markets. Now social media is taking the same approach, fragmenting audiences in order to cultivate multiple platform usury

Social media was designed for the young too, but Facebook is now an old person’s misinformation market without even retro ‘cool’ value. Instagram is a Mad Men marketing platform. Snapchat reproduces the popularity of 19th century picture calling cards. Twitter is an incessant telegram service. YouTube is a vaster cable network. Tiktok, a chain letter warp zone. As these companies start to shift into developing the metaverse, they bring their antiquated politics, ambitions, and imaginations with them.

uman.

An Easy Takeover

Claudia Hart’s sly artworks reflect our current condition, with cruel but true advice from 500 years past. They remind us that the world isn’t more corrupt. It’s only more mediated.

In 1890, Congress almost unanimously passed the Sherman Antitrust Act to ensure an open marketplace. The senator John Sherman put it succinctly: “If we will not endure a king as a political power we should not endure a king over the production, transportation, and sale of any of the necessaries of life.”

In 2021, the United States Surgeon General declared a Warning against Misinformation, specifically targeting social media because people depend on these sites for so much more than family pictures and cute cat videos. The mis/dis-information is a health risk, and a political one. Seven months before the January 6th 2020 attack on the Capital, Zuckerberg personally declined to implement a series of content-neutral proposals that would have reduced misinformation. They would have had an impact on MSI (meaningful social engagement). Internationally, Facebook has spread content that enabled violence against ethnic minorities in countries like Ethiopia and Myanmar. In most cases, changes didn’t require deleting content but implementing simple algorithmic changes. But a loss of less than 1% MSI was considered too great a price to bear. For the company. Not for the people who interact on the platform socially.

Let’s not forget that, frequently, Machiavelli’s and our princes were teenagers when they arrived in power. Do we want our future imagined, designed, and minted by the anxieties and ardor of adolescent boys now too big for their britches?

Make Someone Big

Alice gets an elongated neck as she gets bigger and bigger in Wonderland, an image that Hart applies to a rare lesson for the little people. “Make Someone Big” is a reminder that if you help someone succeed, they will want to get rid of you so that it seems they did it all themselves. The Social Network (2010) told that story in 2 hours, but as we look to who’s vying for power today, who and what got them to their current position is worth taking time to consider.

Supreme Court Associate Justice William O. Douglas wrote a dissenting opinion in United States v. Columbia Steel Co., 334 U.S. 495 (1948) when the court decided to let a steel A&M proceed: “The Curse of Bigness shows how size can become a menace–both industrial and social….Industrial power should be decentralized. It should be scattered into many hands so that the fortunes of the people will not be dependent on the whim or caprice, the political prejudices, the emotional stability of a few self-appointed men.” Known as one of the most liberal judges to ever sit on the court, his words are surprisingly apt for our own time.

Make Them Dependent on You

A mother pig fixes the collar of her piglet in Hart’s “Make Them Dependent on You,” but beyond any lingering memories of maternal overbearing, Machiavelli’s advice is the problem of our day. When people depend on you, they are less likely to get rid of you. The question to ask ourselves is why we let ourselves remain dependent? A people’s movement helped to break up the trains, oil, steel, banks, even bathtub fixtures…Is it inconceivable to break up the web-based platforms?

Each NFT title in Hart’s series points at an aspiration: “Getting Bigger,” “Family Name,” “Taking Over.” There’s a sense of humor around this untrammeled quest for power. Hart modernized the language in “A Child’s Machiavelli,” but its essential argument about our times remains Machiavelli’s uncopyrightable truth: “Never attempt to win by force that which can be won by deception.”

Many of the founders and CEOs of these tech companies were barely out of adolescence when they rose to power, just like the princes that Machiavelli observed. So much of their market remains focused on youth, with the recent acknowledgement by Zuckerberg that his interest in the metaverse is largely about maintaining audience share. Hart’s animated works are a wry gesture about such moves, using 19th century children’s book of verse drawings alongside 16th century political advice to remind audiences that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Hi I’m Tina, …digital artist/ analog painter/ photographer/creator & lover of the obscure, close up, creepy. I also like gin and cats but we save that for now… Join me on my journey of self-expression & dive into my analog- digitial- crazy world. My signature style (using lips as the canvas to my work) was born during the pandemic and has stuck with me since. After entering the NFT scene in Feb 2021 the lips quickly became a collector favourite on other platforms.

Ayuthia Spectabile, the White Ghost Cicada. When I first held this beautiful creature in my hand I gasped. Not from fear or disgust but in sheer awe at the patterns of the fragile wings, with their gold like veins, the touch of turq oise each side of its chunky body and the soft fuzz covering their shell. I felt the urge to show this off to the world, to let people discover the beauty I was experiencing, to look past their phobia and see this unique beauty. I want to challenge what comes to mind when you think of the word “beauty”. It’s more than comfortable ideals and shiny products, designed to make us look and feel desirable. Beauty can be found in places you never dared to look, in colours,
shapes and details you haven’t noticed before. Beauty no longer has a definition. Let me show you.

“Kobo For Your Thoughts. 2021”

Edition 1 of 1

‘Kobo for your thoughts’ is a cultural play on the phrase ‘Penny for your thoughts’ and questions the concept
of the mind overthinking. This painting is part of an ongoing series that explores self-care and the ways
we overcome feelings of uncertainty or doubt. It looks into the sensitivities of displacement and the struggles of
adapting to change. It’s about entering new spaces, delving into new worlds, opening up to new ventures, with
new perspectives by leaving your comfort zone. Each object in the painting represents an aspect of cultural
belonging but ties in with the notion of coming out of your shell. The head-wrap for example, is not only used
to adorn and protect a black woman’s crown but in this piece, it is unraveling the jewels of an explored mind.
Elsewhere the wooden hair pick is painted gold symbolising it as a precious tool used to start the process of change
and depicts both the excitement and therapy black women experience when doing their hair. The floating
orange also represents the first fruits coming through after a new beginning. View the AR version of this

Sekai Machache is a Zimbabwean-Scottish visual artist and curator based in Glasgow. Her work is a deep interrogation of the notion of self. She is interested in the relationship between spirituality, and the role of the artist in disseminating symbolic imagery to provide a space for healing. Sekai’s photographic practice is formulated through digital studio-based compositions utilising body paint and muted lighting to create images that appear to emerge from darkness.

The High Priestess

Edition 1 of 1

The High Priestess is part of an ongoing tarot card series by visual artist and curator Sekai Machache. This series focuses
on the Major Arcana. The 2nd Major Arcana card in the Tarot Deck, representing mystery, stillness and reflection, The High Priestess
symbolizes the time for withdrawal and instinctive self-guidance. In the image, a figure
stands illuminated in the dark yawning of a cave, shrouded and still, wearing Blue of the Horizon, a period style
dress designed in collaboration with artist and seamstress Fiona Catherine Powell. The figure holds a stance in place
that signifies ritualistic movements similar to the gestures in the film Profound Divine Sky. The dress and veil are signifiers
of divine knowledge and The High Priestesses’ leadership, usually represented by a blue robe and a horned diadem. In her re-working a dark veil obscures the face, the hands are cradling and bare. Guardian of the
subconscious mind she flits between these mind realms without hindrance and provides an ethereal knowledge of the
Cosmos, a profound enlightenment on that which is hidden. This image was shot in caves at Auchmithie on the East
coast of Scotland during a month long residency period at Hospitalfield House in Arbroath where the artist created
her first tarot card in the series, The Hierophant. The High Priestess was captured by Antanas Budvytis with
artistic direction, styling, and performance by Sekai Machache.

“The Brixton Bustle”

Edition 1 of 1

Upon exploring Brixton for the first time a few years ago, the one thing that stood out to me was the presence of culture.
Whilst in some parts of Brixton the culture of the community had been noticeably whitewashed due to gentrification,
in other parts such as the Brixton Market, the culture remained strong. Visiting Brixton Market a few months ago,
compelled me to create a painting celebrating its authenticity and richness in spirit. Gentrification tries to replicate
culture whilst excluding the people that create it, but through this painting I wanted to emphasise the fact that the
true spirit of a community can only exist where its original inhabitants and their descendants reside.

Elicia is an expressionist artist, who mainly specialises in water-mixable oils & charcoal to create either a representational or abstract art piece. Elicia’s recent ‘Movement’ & ‘Black Icons’ series represents her fascination with role models, cars & human connections. Even though very different, they are interlinked by the subjects’ kinetic & potential energy. Elicia has just started a new journey, to blend impressionism with her intimate emotions and powerful ideas.

“Show me the challenge and I will show you my power”

Edition 1 of 1

This art piece merges the sensual power of my sister Shelana, an Icon who was loved by many, with the beast
of a Ford Mustang, which was one of her favourite cars. The thick layers of paint interlock and overlap with
each other to represent the movement and connection of both the person and the car. The heavy use of red, black
and white paint is significant as the art piece presents both their energy, elegance and power. The title of this piece
‘Show me the challenge and I will show you my power’; was born from the strength and pain Shelana juggled during
her fight against cancer. By merging these two loves, a new abstract piece is born and the memory of a loved one
will continue for eternity in the digital space. In loving memory of Shelana, my sister, Queen, Icon. 2021 Original artwork Acyclic paint, 80 x 30 cm As a gift to the buyer, I will share a 3D version of this art piece

“Untitled / Rendering / Who Am I?” (2021) (Animated)

Starting from his personal experience, which the artist has projected in his paintings, Fauves has decided to use the subject of cartoons as a symbol representing our body. A body often dominated and enslaved by our ego, in which all the elements and details exposed recall the extreme dissatisfaction to which the human soul is continually subjected in contemporary society. A story that becomes, in a metaphorical sense, the search for one’s superhero who in most cases hides in human weaknesses.

“Finding Freedom” (2019)

Isaac “Drift” Wright is a United States Army special operations veteran who learned to cope with PTSD and depression through urban exploring and documenting cities from unseen perspectives through photography. At the end of 2020 he was arrested for his work, being subjected to four months of incarceration without bond as the government used both his race as a black man and his special military background against him. The story arrived on the front page of The New York Times on June 6th, 2021.

“Paper Trail” (2017) (Animated)

“Neo Noir Taiwan” (2018)

Dave Krugman is an artist, writer, and the founder of ALLSHIPS.CO, a creative community dedicated to the idea that a rising tide raises all ships.

Her work has been featured and shared millions of times on social media and featured in publications like Sony Alpha Universe, DP Review, Art of Visuals, Open Skies Magazine and Patagon Journal.

“Sugar Magnolia”

Edition 1 of 1
We can discover the wonders of
nature

I hail from a magical patch of land called Puerto Rico. Not only did I get my taste for coffee there, but also a life-changing education in the arts. For me, one thing fills the void above all else: The freedom to express my fears, regrets & hopes without responding to a corporate entity. My work is fueled by experiences that haunt me whether beautiful or dark. I like for the work to tell a story through symbolism – visual essays for those who are willing to read through the layers of paint.

The Unravelling

Edition 1 of 1
For my genesis piece, I felt I needed to
get something created that’s been
stuck in my mind since the day it
happened. This piece takes us to the
scene of one of the saddest and most
moving things I’ve ever seen. A child
traveled to a distant city in hopes of
taking the same Hippocratic Oath his
mother, father and sister took.
Instead, he tragically reached the end
of his short journey alone, within the
cold embrace of a bathtub. The week
leading up to the funeral was full of
dread.

Barcelona based and Colombian bred sculptor, painter and architect Mareo Rodriguez’s work is filled with the grittiness of natural territory: mountains, rocks, waveforms and lava. Nature, the ever-changing topography of the mountains and the condensation of light and its process of transformation and expansion of energy over time are his biggest inspiration. Mareo has previously exhibited internationally in USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Mexico, Emirates, England, among others.

PORTALS

Unique NFT piece. The crack opens a
portal that creates a tension between
two sides that seem to approach and
move away at the same time, as a
constant force of repulsion and

natural in the battle of opposites that
it can be defined by the denial of its
existence, a reflection of the void, the
nothingness. Faced with a sense of
eternal emptiness and uncertainty, a
space to understand the possibilities
of the new world. It is a way of
standing in front of the abyss; before
infinite possibilities.

MOOD’ is not only a spin on his name
but also a nod to his gritty timeless
energy that lives on through all his
fans. RIP DOOM

“The Eternal Life”

Edition 1 of 1
This NFT brings a reproduction based on the oil painting on canvas painted in 2013 (260cm x 290cm), belonging to
the collection of the National Museum of Fine Art in Chile. “It was a cloudy summer day.
I spent much of the day in a park in front of a tree. I did not realize its majesty, until the clouds literally parted
and a ray of sunlight illuminated it. At that moment it appeared the image that I had been looking for months.
While I was observing the tree many images and childhood memories came to my head. I saw abundance,
diversity and movement in its branches and from them I saw a girl hanging, perhaps symbolizing the archetype of the
“hanging,” maybe just having fun or maybe playing the game of death.” Guillermo Lorca.
